Celebrate Turing's centenary with codes and ciphers on NRICH

2012 is the centenary of Alan Turing's birth, and as part of our celebrations our NRICH project has a special focus this month on codes and ciphers, with engaging mathematical activities for Key Stages 1 right through to 5 (ages 5 to 18).

Turing's astonishing achievements included his work during the Second World War at Bletchley Park on breaking the Enigma cipher. The NRICH code and cipher activities have been developed in collaboration with Dr James Grime, our Enigma Project Officer, who visits schools and public events with a genuine Enigma cipher machine (on loan from Simon Singh) to give talks and run hands-on workshops on the maths of cryptography and codebreaking through history.
