Maths and Sport - celebrating London 2012!

We are celebrating London 2012 with our 'Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games' project, developing free online resources exploring maths through the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 

'Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games' has been awarded the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme, and is a featured partner project in the Practical Learning strand of Get Set +, the London 2012 education programme. The free resources are created by our hugely successful NRICH project and Plus online magazine, and have also been published on a new dedicated Maths and Sport website.

Activities (for all Key Stages from 1 to 5) engage students with maths in the context of sport and the Olympics. KS 1 and 2 activities help pupils explore and understand mathematical concepts and processes. KS 3, 4 and 5 activities develop problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking. Detailed teachers’ notes give ideas on how to approach activities in the classroom. 

Articles, aimed at older secondary students and general readers, provide in-depth insight into the fascinating real-world applications of maths within the Games. The site also features video maths challenges produced with input from us by BBC Two Learning Zone.

In addition to the free online resources, we also created a hands-on Maths of Sport Roadshow, featuring a triathlon or pentathlon of mathematical activities set in a sports context, which has been taken to schools throughout the UK over the past year, and has also been run in schools in Ireland, Gibralter, Germany and France.
