Maths Clubs can offer teachers a great opportunity to introduce students to interesting mathematical ideas that are sometimes difficult to fit into everyday teaching. Participating in a Maths Club can have a positive impact on students' problem-solving skills and their attitudes towards the subject. If you're thinking of setting up a Maths Club in your Primary school, you may need to consider some of the questions below:
- Will the club be for a particular year group, or for a wider age range?
- Will it mainly be for the benefit of high prior attainers or for everyone?
- How will you select tasks? Where will you find them?
- Will you offer a choice of tasks?
- How will you publicise the club to make it as appealing as possible?
- When will your club take place? How often? And where?
- Will you encourage older students/colleagues to volunteer to help?
Join Charlie and Liz from NRICH to discuss these questions with Fran Watson from Cambridge Mathematics, who used to run the NRICH Hands-on Maths Roadshow, as well as Maths Clubs in a variety of Primary and Secondary settings. We will ensure we set aside time to work on some possible Maths Club tasks together, and hope to inspire you to start a Maths Club in your own school.
This webinar is aimed at primary school mathematics teachers. It continues the NRICH development webinar series, all of which are available on our Problem-solving Schools Resources and professional development page.
