Maths and Sport
Our Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games project was part of the official Get Set+ education programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was awarded the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.
About the project
Our Maths and Sport resources included activities for Key Stages 1 to 4 and articles exploring the many applications of mathematics in sport, produced by NRICH and Plus. We also hosted a Maths and Sport Roadshow which visited schools to run hands-on mathematical activities in the context of sport.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, said:
"Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games will encourage young people to fulfil their potential. I am proud that partners such as the University of Cambridge’s Millennium Mathematics Project are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in education."
The project also led to a partnership with the BBC, providing advice and producing supporting materials to accompany the BBC Two series 3, 2, 1 Go!, and a collaboration with Arsenal FC on a small collection of football-themed mathematics resources.
Our Maths and Sport project was supported by grants from the Nuffield Foundation, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and Gresham College.
