STEP mark schemes

7 March 2019

The mark schemes for the 2015-2018 papers are available from Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, bundled in with the past papers (note that the "mark scheme" tab is just for the 2011 STEP 1 mark scheme!). The examiners reports are also well worth reading.

Mark schemes for 2013 and 2014 can be found here.

STEP Resources

21 August 2018

Hi all!

I'm not sure if this counts as self-plugging, but I've put up a central repository containing a collation of STEP past papers, with their markschemes, examiner reports and hints and solutions where available as well as a handy questions spreadsheet, links and explanations of various things, and a copy of Siklos' Booklets (both the old and new ones). It's nothing new, but I certainly found it useful to have everything in one place when I was studying.

Welcome!

29 June 2017

This forum is for discussing the assignments in the STEP Support Programme and any other aspects of STEP, studying maths at university, etc.

The assignments here are intended to increase your confidence at solving hard maths questions, and also introduce you to some interesting puzzles and areas of maths that might be useful.

As a very rough guide we would recommend those aiming to sit STEP III in the summer of 2018 to work through the assignments to this approximate timetable:

Maths Formulae

29 June 2017

This site uses MathJax to render Maths. It is basically $\LaTeX$ (that's Latex in case you find that hard to read) and there are lots of tutorials on the internet that you can use.

To type in a formula you need to surround it with dollar signs, i.e. $...$. x squares would be x^2 etc, or with the dollar signs around it it becomes $x^2$.

(You might also need to set the Text format to "Full HTML").

I am a student from india. I am in year 12. I am preparing for the JEE exam to get a good grip on problem solving techniques and also i have to prepare for 12th boards which are school exams at a national level. So i can't leave any of this but at the same time, my goal is to come to cambridge. At the end of the day, i am always left out with so much study to do and cannot get time to prepare for STEP. And i cannot even leave Jee preps, because if by chance i donot get admitted to cambridge, i might need jee result to get admission in india itself. So please guide me.

Grade Boundaries

21 June 2019

While looking at the grade boundaries for past years I saw that the mark requirement for a Grade 2is often extremely close to the requirements to a Grade 1 while being very far from a Grade 3 - out of curiosity why is there such a large difference from 2->3 compared to 1->2?

Invariant Lines and Eigenvectors

9 June 2019

Hello,

I've never learned about invariant lines but I know how to get eigenvectors. I know the difference is just the constant term, so is there any simple way to get invariant lines after getting the eigenvectors/values of a matrix? Thank you.
