STEP Support Programme

Foundation Assignment 25

The last of the Foundation Assignments has now been published. In a couple of weeks we will publish some mixed STEP I questions (with preparation sections).

STEP papers can be downloaded via the Admissions Testing Service. Even if you are not sitting STEP II you might find that the STEP II modules are helpful in your preparation for STEP I as the two papers have the same specification.

Good luck!

Hi. Could potentially be wrong, but I think there's a slight error in the markscheme for the STEP part of this assignment. I agree with the final answer, but on the third line from the bottom, there is a tan^2(u) rather than a tan(u).

I know it's minor, but it confused me for a good few minutes so though it might be worth pointing out.

You're correct. Good spot! :-)

Aside: [Incidentally, I dislike the part of that solution that goes "if you hadn't done the preparation question..." since there is in fact an easier way to do the problem without having to reduce it to an expression in $\tan$ and avoiding the previous parts and the preparation question completely. ]

For now I have put in a line saying "Other methods are also possible". I'll take a longer look after June!

Thank you very much - I have corrected this mistake (and hopefully not included more!).
