Assignment 17, warm down question

8 April 2018

I am confused by the mod calculation, could someone help me out?
I understand the reason why for example 14≡2≡-1 (mod 3)
However in the answer sheet, there are some operations without explanations which I cannot catch the idea.

Examples are:
2^n ≡ (-1)^n (mod 3)
125^m ≡ (-1)^n (mod 9)
5^n ≡ (-2)^n (mod 7)

when I take n as number in, I know the equation is right, but I don't know why the equation is satisfied.
If you ask me 5^n ≡ ? (mod 7), I won't be able to figure out by myself.

STEP 3 Q1 2010

27 March 2018

Hopefully someone will be able to clarify something small on STEP 3 Q1 2010. On every worked solution I've seen (e.g MEI step solutions/TSR solutions), when completing part (ii) the A^2 term isn't multiplied by 1/n . I understand why the summation does not remain, but surely a^2 will be multiplied by 1/n? Also in the notation for (ii), is the A^2 supposed to be with the (Xk)^2 and multiplied by 1/n, or not? Thank you in advance!

STEP II Mechanics Question 3

22 March 2018

The question says the particle is projected in a direction that makes an angle 60 with OB, but it is actually the "shadow" in the horizontal field that makes the angle 60 with OB according to the solution. I think it should be made clear in the question to avoid confusion.

Assignment15_1

19 March 2018

Enjoyable assignment on series etc. With regard to warm-up question (i)(b), I noticed that a first term of 0.75 is problematic in that it yields a third term of zero and I thought this might merit some comment within the assignment itself or within the feedback notes.

Villier Park STEP Course

13 March 2018

Has anyone been on or heard about the Villers Park Stepping Stones to STEP success course in the Easter holidays? The programme looks strange, and not particularly focused on STEP preperation, mostly composed of lectures on different topics that aren't really related. I was wondering if it would be useful or not, and if it expands on the Offer Holder day which I attended last week, and if it is worth spending 3 days at.
Thanks alot

STEP mark schemes

12 March 2018

Hi - I thought it might be useful to indicate where some STEP mark schemes can be found.

The Admissions Testing Service website has mark schemes for 2015, 2016 and 2017 (in the folders for STEP past papers for each year). These ones should be error free!

Old Format Papers

27 February 2018

Hello,
I'm worried that soon I'll have run out of step past papers in the current format to do. Would you recommend doing the old format of questions or are they too different to be as helpful? Or are there any other banks of step style questions out there to tap into?
Thanks for your help.
