Assignment 16, 2iv

6 October 2017

I don't get how I'm supposed to do it. It tells me to use substitution of x = ky to find the second equation, though I've done this and the k values fluctuate. Moreover, what are we supposed to do about the constant at the end without any x attached to it?

Assignment 15, q4 does what it says it can't

4 October 2017

The second part tells me that I should stock up 360 miles worth at the first stop and then come back with 240 in the car. Then, it says, I should pick up enough so I have 460 miles worth Inthe car.

But the question said before that I can only ever have 300 miles worth in the car. Car can fit 300, regulations prevent other amounts of petrol.

Assignment 16

2 October 2017

In question 2ii the hints and partial solutions say you should end up with 0=2s^3-2s^2-s+1 however I don't understand why it's +1 since 2cos2A=2(1-2sin^2A)=2-4sin^2A and so I'm confused about why it's +1 rather than +2. Thanks for the help.

Assignment 1 - STEP Question - c^2 condition

30 September 2017

Hi

I'm very stuck on the very last part of the STEP Question in Assignment 1.

I'm not sure what the question even means. There are so many ifs and only ifs and the reasoning seems to be running one way then the other. I can't follow it.

I've done everything up to this point including answering the part about "Show that". But I can't understand the last line. I'm so confused I don't even know what my question is. Anyway here's the relevant part of the question:

Possible error in Assignment 15

29 September 2017

Hello STEPpers,

RE: Assignment 15, Warm-up Q1.(iiii)(c)

We're told that g(r-1) is non-zero for r running from 1 to n-1
This surely means that g(n-1) and g(n) may be zero.. Not good !

Should this be 1 to n+! instead?
Then you'd be guaranteed that g(n-1) and g(n) are not zero.

The feedback assumes that g(n) is defined so I'm persuaded that the r's should run to n+!

Thanks
BGN

Assignment 14, question 3

26 September 2017

It says that F0 is 0. Is this just a seed value? Because if we evaluate it with n = 0, F0 = 2.

If so, doesn't this mean that we can't really use F0 in the question?

Assignment 2 Warm Down

26 September 2017

Hello,
I am currently working on the assignment 2 warm down, and I have found two expressions for $(OX)^2$ in $R^2$ and $r^2$ but after rearranging them, I keep ending up with $R^2 - r^2 = 2ab-b^2$. I know that I have clearly done something wrong algebraically or else I have misinterpreted the lengths of the sides involved.
I would appreciate any pointers on where my mistake could be.
Thank you for your help!
p.s. I hope the maths formatting works!

Assignment 12, 3ii

I've looked at the hints but I don't know how one gets to the fractions displayed.

I understand the m/(m+2) but that is about it. Could someone run it through with me?

The first part was fine, then it asked 'Deduce that if x is very large....' I have no idea where to start, can anyone explain this?
